<image:title>News - Reflections on the 2025 NTW in Las Cruces, NM - The final day, as always, there were local ag industry tours. Our group visited the Santa Teresa Cattle Crossing at the US-Mexico border, the largest, most efficient, and most modern facilities on the border, where over 3,000 head of cattle typically cross each day. This is about 62% of the cattle that cross between Mexico and the US, equating to about $625 million in import and exports. Most of the cattle that enter the US at Santa Teresa proceed to feedlots in west and midwestern states. This mass movement of cattle across thousands of miles brought to mind the importance of the work of MSU’s ERAIL (Emergency Response to Accidents Involving Livestock) team and their award-winning work in MI.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Guam Regional Workshop Training Reflections Fall 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>The conference drew nearly 200 attendees from the United States, Micronesia, and Taiwan. Sessions covered topics such as stress management, ergonomics, caregiver support, and risky behavior in rural youth. Michigan’s own Ned Stoller presented two sessions on conducting farm assessments and DIY assistive technology. A critical takeaway from the conference was the significant lack of local food processing in Guam. The island depends heavily on imported goods delivered by ships and planes, creating severe challenges during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and a 2023 hurricane that left communities without supplies or power for weeks. Building resilience within farming communities in Guam and Micronesia was a central theme of the conference because of these recent collective memories.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Farmers are vital to our food supply, and AgrAbility ensures the people they serve can access their livelihood with adaptive tools, physical therapies, and connecting them to financial and mental health resources, as well as connecting them to farmers in similar situations to provide support and mentorship. The AgrAbility project is part of a competitive U.S. Department of Agriculture and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) grant program where land grant universities partner with disability nonprofits in 22 states to execute the project. In Michigan, that partnership is between Michigan State University Extension and Easterseals MORC. At the national level, AgrAbility was first funded in the 1990 Farm Bill, shortly after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 2023, Michigan AgrAbility supported 215 clients. The individuals they served had a wide range of disabilities, including arthritis, back pain, amputations, paralysis, hearing or vision loss, and chronic fatigue.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Michigan AgrAbility supports the farmer’s entire family as well. Evan, age 12, has Cerebral Palsy and likes to help his parents around their corn and pumpkin farm. Before Michigan AgrAbility, he had difficulty navigating the bumpy terrain and long distances with his walker and standard wheelchair. Ned Stoller connected with the family and recommended an all-terrain power chair that would provide better maneuverability. Michigan AgrAbility was able to provide a scholarship to help pay for the chair, giving Evan the independence he needed to thrive. “I want to be a YouTube steamer for my side job,” Evan said. “But my real job will be a businessman and working with my dad.” Another aspect of Michigan AgrAbility is the importance of their work with Spanish-speaking participants, largely carried out by Andrea Garza, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant who works with Michigan AgrAbility through Easterseals MORC.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Some events change lives in the blink of an eye. Some people choose to withdraw from life after a traumatic injury. Some people choose to do what they can and pursue a fulfilling life. Caleb Keisling is someone who chose to do, achieve, and live life as fully as possible after he was stuck by a vehicle while riding his bike at the age of 12. His injuries include limited mobility and a traumatic brain injury.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Traumatic Brain Injury Doesn’t Keep Caleb Down </image:title>
<image:caption>With encouragement and push from a motivated set of parents, Caleb grew up doing things that he loved, alongside the friends and family who remained by his side. Therapeutic riding, showing steers and horses at the fair, working on equipment, were all part of Caleb’s life growing up on the farm. He broke and trained a steer calf to follow him while tied to his wheelchair. The community noticed and bought that calf for $40,000 during the youth livestock auction at the Clinton County Fair. The buyer---St. Johns Community Foundation---donated the calf back to him so he could raise it to maturity and sell it again the following year. He restored a tractor with his father and chronicled it in a 4H notebook and took home a first-place blue ribbon for the effort. Again, people noticed. The number of entries in the overlooked category of equipment restoration at the fair grew because of Caleb. He was living proof of what could be accomplished, no matter the circumstances.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Traumatic Brain Injury Doesn’t Keep Caleb Down </image:title>
<image:caption>Caleb is 30 years old now. He had a job at a plant nursery until Covid sidetracked his employment. But he loved the work, learned, and is now establishing a small vegetable garden so he can sell produce from a roadside stand at the farm. Their well-traveled rural road is a great location to sell vegetables and fruit. Caleb’s local celebrity status can’t hurt sales either. Caleb chose to do---and he’s done much. He is proof that even though a disability changes, there is so much that can be accomplished with determination and some encouraging support.</image:caption>
